Why start with bopomofo typing?
Children in Taiwan learn bopomofo first, in grade one. Over about ten weeks with the 首冊 (first booklet) they master ㄅㄆㄇㄈ and how to blend sounds, then move on to characters. Zhuyin is the foundation for reading and for looking words up — and it's the most common way to type Chinese in Taiwan.
In computer class, children type characters with a zhuyin keyboard. Getting comfortable with bopomofo typing doesn't just make typing faster — it also strengthens how they blend initials, finals, and tones.
How to practice

Pick a grade and start
Begin with lower- or upper-grade words. See the character and type its zhuyin one symbol at a time.
